The purpose of academic advisement at Illinois State University is to assist students in the exploration and development of meaningful self-directed educational goals. Advisors assist students in designing academic programs which, in addition to the required course work for a degree, will help the students select courses capitalizing on their strengths and interests.
Illinois State provides a two-tiered advising system. All undergraduate students with less than 24 semester hours of credit and all students who are classified as General or Unclassified students are advised in the Academic Advisement, 340 Fell Hall, (309) 438-7604.
Students with declared majors who have earned 24 or more hours are advised in their major departments. Departments at Illinois State University use diverse strategies to provide academic advisement. Departmental advisement may be centralized or decentralized; advisors may be faculty, administrative/professional staff, or graduate assistants.
