Managing Your Responsibilities

As a student at Illinois State University, you will need to manage your responsibilities.  There will be many demands on your time, and you will need to make choices about how to use your time.  In addition to investing your time in your course work, prioritizing academic and career planning is vital for your academic success!

You will need to:

  • Make decisions regarding academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Discuss plan of study and ways to attain academic, career, and personal goals with your academic advisor.
  • Comprehend graduation requirements, major/minor requirements, and understand how to complete all requirements.
  • Schedule and keep appointments with academic advisor.
  • Be prepared for advisement appointments by bringing a list of questions and all academic materials (catalog, redbird reference guide, appointment notes, etc). Read your Illinois State University email.
  • At the first sign of a problem, seek help and follow through on advice. 
  • Become involved in activities that enhance your educational experience while maintaining your academic goals at Illinois State University. Visit the Dean of Students' office for opportunities.
  • Treat all university representatives, including student representatives, with respect and professionalism.
  • Communicate questions, concerns, and issues directly with appropriate university representatives.
