Selecting and registering for classes

Academic Advisement helps you create the perfect schedule.

Selecting and Registering for Classes

Each Illinois State student is responsible for his or her own academic progress.  To assist in this process, your academic advisor in University College Academic Advisement is available to discuss your many academic options, including major and minor plans of study, course selection, and available campus resources.  Below is a list of some of the resources you should consult regarding your academic standing and course options before meeting with your academic advisor.

Undergraduate Catalog

Your undergraduate catalog contains important information including university policies and procedures, degree requirements, and academic program requirements.  Within each major and minor program, including university wide minor programs, is a list of required and elective courses needed to complete the corresponding program of study.  Additionally, there are course descriptions for every course available within each school and department, including prerequisite information.

You will also find detailed information on your general education requirements including specific courses at Illinois State that meet each stated requirement.  Please be advised there are two general education programs listed in your catalog: General Education for most students who started their college careers at Illinois State; and Illinois Articulation Initiative for students who transferred to Illinois State from a community college or other four year institution.  Please consult your academic advisor if you have questions regarding which general education program you need to complete.

Progress Toward My Degree

On the iCampus portal, you will find the “Progress toward my degree” channel.  This channel gives you a detailed breakdown of graduation, general education, and declared major requirements to help you better understand how your previous, current, and future coursework fits into your academic plan.  A paper copy of this information, called and academic progress summary, can be obtained by visiting the Student Services and Referral Center in Moulton 107 free of charge.  If you have questions interpreting your progress summary, you can use the online walk-through in iCampus or consult your academic advisor.
