When first-year students attend Preview they will work with an academic advisor during the two day program. Most often, this academic advisor will be the advisor the student will work with through the first-year experience.
Transfer Students will work with their academic advisor when they attend the Transfer Registration Program.
General students without an advisor should request to be assigned one in Fell 340.
If you are currently in an AP course, the only way to earn credit at Illinois State is to complete the AP exam and receive a score that awards credit. You can review the AP scores to receive credit in the Undergraduate Catalog.
It is very important that you take the COMPASS math placement exam early, as you may want to complete a developmental math course before attending Illinois State. Other recommendations would be an introductory Speech or Writing course. If you would like to verify your plans for summer school, you may contact University College Academic Advisement by phone at (309) 438-7604 for assistance. To see whether or not you can receive credit toward your degree at Illinois State for courses you have taken at other universities please visit the Registrar's office Web site. Also call the Evaluations Office to verify that your classes will, indeed, transfer.
If you are able to declare your major, you will have access to courses that are blocked for majors only. This may provide additional course options to you for your first year.
Students that enter Illinois State as freshmen General Students may graduate in a four-year time line; however, it is important to note that not all programs provide "room" for electives or allow general students to take required major courses. Preview is a required orientation program for all first-year students. Students register during Preview, and it is strongly recommended that every effort be made to attend Preview. If you have extenuating circumstances that might prevent you from attending, please contact Enrollment Management and Academic Services at (309) 438-2156 and the office staff will assist in processing your request.
It is a great idea to come to an early Preview session. We provide options throughout the summer to ensure that each student is able to get an appropriate schedule. It is important to remember that classes are offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Students need to be flexible when making class schedule decisions.)
