Peer Advisor Position Information

Peer Advisor's duties may include, but are not limited to, working with the professional Advisement staff in the following ways:

  • Conducting individual advisement conferences with students
  • Explaining and reviewing degree requirements and the Academic Progress Summary and I-Campus "Progress toward my degree" link
  • Contacting students regarding advisement and academic support services
  • Staffing the University College Academic Advisement Help Desk and Phone Bank
  • Office and caseload management
  • Assist office staff with customer service related tasks

The Peer Advisor position includes the following benefits:

  • Priority Registration
    Peer Advisors are assigned early registration (often first day) in order to meet job related responsibilities.
  • Flexible Schedule
    Peer Advisors can develop work schedules that accommodate classes and other academic commitments.
  • Possible Summer Employment
    Full and part-time summer work options (based on seniority) are available.
  • Campus Location
    The office is located on the third floor of Fell Hall, which makes it convenient to work in between classes.
  • Paid Position
    This is a paid position with raises based on seniority.

Position Requirements

We are looking for students who currently have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at Illinois State and who will have completed two semesters of college work prior to June 1, 2008.
To be successful, you must possess:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Interest in helping other students
  • Strong interest in academics

Peer Advisors work a minimum of 15 hours a week. Weekly training sessions are held on Mondays from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Participating in training is mandatory; therefore, coursework must be planned accordingly. Occasionally Peer Advisors are asked to represent University College in other capacities

If you wish to apply for the Peer Advisor position, applications are due by 4:00pm on  February 4, 2008.

  • February 11 - 26, 2008:                    First Round of Interviews (w/ qualified applicants)
  • February 27, 2008:                            Committee Assessment of Applicants
  • February 28 - March 4, 2008:           Follow-up Interviews (if necessary)
  • March 5 - 7, 2008:                            Selection Notification
