Services for Transfer Students

We advise transfer students who are undeclared regardless of credit hours earned and those who have declared majors but have earned fewer than 24 credit hours. Working directly with the Orientation and Transition Services, we understand the unique concerns and questions transfer students may have. We are equipped to make appropriate referrals to appropriate campus offices if our students’ needs are beyond the scope of our expertise.

Transfer Days

During our transfer day appointments, we discuss course and major options, major admission requirements, and we will assist you with course registration for the upcoming semester. You will then be advised by a University College advisor until you are accepted into a major.

Planning

We strive to meet with you at least once during each semester to discuss the major exploration process, major admission requirements, goal setting, and upcoming coursework. We encourage you to meet with us early in the semester in order to discuss majors and academic planning as many majors only accept applications during the beginning of the semester. You are assigned an individual registration date and time and are expected to register independently.

If you are undecided, it is important to begin taking some exploratory steps. Please see the Find Your Major web site for more information. Please also be aware that Illinois State University has a policy requiring students have a declared major upon completing 75 credit hours.

Walk-ins

Advisors are available during designated times for walk-in conferences. Please call (309) 438-7604 to determine your advisor’s walk-in hours. Walk-in conferences are typically brief conferences lasting no more than 15 minutes in order to accommodate as many students as possible.

E-mails/Phone Calls

Advisors frequently use e-mail with students, communicating important updates, deadlines, requirements, requests, and changes. You are responsible for checking your ilstu.edu account on a daily basis. For security purposes, faculty and staff only respond to student messages from ilstu.edu accounts. You are responsible for updating your phone number via the iCampus portal.

Project Success Participants (students with a cumulative GPA below 2.0)

Participation in Project Success, a program sponsored by Enrollment Management and Academic Services (EMAS), helps students set academic goals, become aware of campus services, understand probationary policies, and ultimately return to good academic standing.

As part of the program, you are required to meet with your advisor to discuss your situation last semester as well as set goals, identify resources, understand the ramifications of repeated probation, and plan for future semesters. We want to meet with you early in the semester to discuss Project Success.
