What do students have to say about Developmental Math?

Need Help Outside of Class?

We maintain a math lab for those times you need additional help, outside of class, with our core Developmental Math courses: Beginning Algebra 102 and Intermediate Algebra 104.

Help is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding and improve their grades. Attendance is voluntary, but it's a chance to get together with people taking the same course to compare notes, to discuss important concepts, to develop strategies for studying, and to test themselves before their professors do.

The assistants, who are there to help, are students themselves and are prepared to share with you what they have learned over the years about how to study math. They've been there and done that; they know how hard learning math can be. They know the course content, and are anxious to help guide you through it. They won't scold you or criticize you or make you feel bad or do it for you. No, their job is to help you be successful, to think about the lectures you hear and the books you read so you can learn the course material in the way that is best for you.

Math is different from studying other subjects. It is primarily learned by doing...doing the problems, doing the homework, doing the additional work provided in math lab. Each class builds on the previous ones, so getting in the habit of review of concepts at the lab reinforces the old material, and makes learning new material easier.

Free Learning Support:

  • Developmental Math is a great place to go to develop a good study routine and to get your homework done before you go home to relax at the end of the day.
  • Come to the Developmental Math Lab early in the semester and visit us often to stay on track with the materials, to get your questions answered, to get the support you need, or just to have a place to think and work.
  • Four computers are available in the lab to access instructor’s Web sites.
  • Free printing is available for course materials.

Benefits

  • Developmental Math has several tables and chairs for you to spread out your materials and work on your math.
  • You do not need to make an appointment, and all of our services are FREE!
  • Undergraduate math tutors and graduate assistants are available in the lab to provide learning assistance.
  • You will find many of your student peers in the lab working on their math.
  • You are encouraged to work with students around you or ask questions of the tutors if you need help.
  • You can make up tests, quizzes, and other graded works in the lab when instructor authorization is granted.

Tips

  • We can help you understand how to solve problems and exercises in your course work, but we cannot solve the problems for you.
  • Give yourself some time. Each class builds on the previous ones. Be sure to keep up with the instructor each day, attending class, reading the text and doing the homework. The lab gets a lot of attention on test days or days when an assignment is due, be sure you come in before assignments are do so we have the time to help you.
  • Don't expect instant results. Math takes time to learn and success requires the kind of study routine the developmental math lab can offer.
