You can learn more about placement testing by visiting our Placement Tests page.
Day one begins with check-in at 9:15 a.m. Mandatory sessions end at 7:45 p.m.
Day two begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 12:15 p.m. Preview is a two-day program.
Students must be at all mandatory sessions during the two days in order to register for classes.
If you would like to change your major, you are strongly encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions toll free at (800) 366-2478 as soon as possible, but at least one week prior to your Preview date. Although many students are able to change majors prior to Preview, we cannot guarantee that your request will be approved, as some departments may have restricted majors as a result of competitive admissions, space availability, or additional criteria.
If you have special arrangements that restrict your ability to attend Preview, please contact the Office of Enrollment Management and Academic Services at (309) 438-2156.
Staying overnight in the residence hall is strongly encouraged for students and the vast majority stay.
Preview is quite busy and can last until 10:30 p.m. on the first day and begins at 8:00 a.m. on the second day. The more a student is on campus, the more comfortable he or she will be with Illinois State University. Even commuter students report that the overnight stay was enjoyable, as it helped them make new friends!
Remember, all sessions are mandatory and if students stay off campus, they must still attend all mandatory sessions.
Information regarding hotel accommodations may be found by contacting the Bloomington-Normal Area Visitors and Convention Bureau at or by phone at (800) 433-8226.
Preview is a MANDATORY program for all incoming freshmen. Orientation will help incoming students learn what they need to know in order to be successful at Illinois State, as well as register them for classes.
Preview is not mandatory for family members or guests, but they are strongly encouraged to attend.
Online reservations will begin in mid-March through the Web for those who have paid their Enrollment Deposit Fee (EDF). We DO NOT take phone or fax reservations.
Please note that only a limited number of students can be accommodated each day to ensure appropriately small advisement groups.
Contact the Office of Admissions to make an appointment for a campus tour or an open house. Preview is not a campus tour.
We recognize and appreciate how valuable the entire family is to a student’s academic success; however the Preview program is designed for adult family members. Family members are encouraged to keep young children at home because childcare will not be provided. Students who bring more than 2 guests will be charged an additional $25 per guest; this includes children over the age of 12.
If you need a reasonable accommodation to fully participate in the Preview program, please contact the Preview office at (309) 438-8486 at least one week prior to your reserved Preview date. Preview participants will be responsible for providing their own wheelchairs during their time on campus.
For dietary restrictions, please contact the Preview office at (309) 438-8486 or preview@IllinoisState.edu so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Please contact us at least 2 business days prior to your scheduled Preview date.
