Placement Tests

Math Placement

Note: The COMPASS Math Placement Exam must be taken prior to Preview, and should only be taken by students who have paid the Enrollment Deposit Fee. Scores may not transfer to other institutions.

If your ACT math subscore is 27 or greater, or your SAT math subscore is 620 or greater, you do NOT need to take the COMPASS Math Placement Exam. However, if your ACT math subscore is 26 or below, or your SAT math subscore is below 620, you MUST take the COMPASS Math Placement Exam in order to register for math classes during Preview.

Please visit University College Testing Services for further information on how to schedule a testing appointment, remote testing locations, guidelines for calculator use and other pertinent information.

French, German and Spanish Self-Placement Tests

Please Note: The French, German and Spanish Placement tests are not required, but they will help you place yourself in the level that is right for you. If you do not start in the right level, it is difficult to change levels once the semester has begun.

The French, German and Spanish programs at Illinois State offer courses at all skill levels. Our placement test is designed to help you select the course best suited to your needs and abilities. The test is free, multiple choice, and takes between 30-60 minutes to complete. You will receive your score immediately, after which you can visit the page preceding your online test to determine which language class you should take. Do you already have experience in a language and will start at a higher level?  Read more about how to get credit for free for language classes that you place out of.

If you have questions regarding the placement exam, please visit the site or contact the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Stevenson Hall 114 by e-mail at or by phone at (309) 438-3604.
