First Year LinC

Moving from home to campus can be a shock, even for the most experienced among us. New faces, new places, new schedules, new friends, new food, new freedoms...it's a lot to take in all at once. There is a better way than sleeping through every breakfast or wearing the same pants for weeks on end or staying up till 3 a.m. once a week writing papers or cramming for tests. It's called First Year LinC.

First Year LinC won't get you up or make the coffee, but it will help you get through your first year with the least amount of pain and angst. Give us the first eight weeks of the fall semester and we will show you how campus life can be a whole lot easier with just a few tips.

You will learn how to find the resources you need, explore your major and/or career interests, and develop strategies for getting involved on campus - it's the University's how-to course for life after high school.

First Year LinC Instructor Recruitment

University College is soliciting applications for instructors for the First Year Learning in Communities (LinC) Seminar. The seminar is an 8-week one-credit course designed to assist students in their transition to the University and provide tools to help them succeed at Illinois State. Our focus in fall 2009 will remain on three major themes: 1) assisting students in their transition to college; 2) helping students identify majors and careers; and 3) introducing students to issues and problems that impact the public. Many new assignments, activities, and discussions will be developed to further enhance the seminar's role in the Political Engagement Project. (Check out the PEP website at http://www.americandemocracy.ilstu.edu/pep/ to learn more about how Illinois State faculty and students are getting involved!)

Again this year registration for the seminar will take place when students attend Preview during the summer. The new freshman athletes will also participate this year.

Stipends provided to instructors will be determined based upon the following considerations: current NTT Union Contract guidelines; level of degree held by the instructor (bachelor's degree required, master’s degree preferred); and varying administrative responsibilities held by staff in other areas. This stipend will be paid incrementally from August through October.

If you are interested in applying to teach a LinC seminar, please submit an electronic application form with a current CV or resume at this website: http://www.ucollege.ilstu.edu/fyl. Applications must be received by Friday, February 27 for full consideration.

Instructor selection will be finalized by Friday, March 6, 2009. Following the selection, additional information will be provided to the LinC instructors regarding the seminar schedule and training.
