Tutor Job Description

The University Center for Learning Assistance (UCLA) helps students learn how to learn, improve understanding of course content, and develop stronger writing abilities. The UCLA builds on students’ strengths to help them achieve their full academic potential.

The center offers small-group tutoring on a weekly basis, as well as drop-in tutoring for courses in the Inner Core of the General Education Program. In addition, the center offers one-to-one writing assistance on papers and written projects, helping students at any stage of the project for any course. Study Skills Workshops and personal coaching are also provided to help students individualize study strategies for academic success.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in the area in which he/she desires to tutor and be able to convey that knowledge clearly via the spoken and written word. A grade of A or high B is usually required in the course(s) in which the candidate is applying to tutor, as well as an overall GPA of at least 3.0. Additional courses in the subject area applied for would be preferred. The tutor works with individual students or groups of students, providing help tailored to each student’s needs, so he/she must be friendly, desire to be helpful, and must be able to communicate effectively.

While the main responsibility is tutoring, there will be other tasks as assigned.
