What Students Have to Say About Us
The UCLA is located in 133 Stevenson Hall.
UCLA services are available to all Illinois State University students and are free of charge. If you need a special accommodation, please contact the UCLA at (309) 438-7100.
In a writing assistance session, you meet individually with a tutor. Our tutors are able to help you with all aspects of writing your paper, from the brainstorming process to the final draft revision. Our tutors do not “proofread” papers, rather they assist you in deciding on the content of the paper and organizing your ideas into a well-written paper.
Group tutoring sessions assist students with specific subjects. The groups meet weekly with a tutor, and consist of no more than five students who are in the same course. Based on the center’s philosophy of helping students “learn how to learn”, the group tutor is able to provide further explanation of difficult topics or concepts, review for tests or quizzes, answer student questions, as well as helping the students to develop strategies to improve their study skills and build on their strengths.
Study skills workshops are group sessions designed to assist students with a variety of topics including time management, test taking, using notes and textbooks effectively, writing and documentation workshops, stress management, and preparing for finals. These workshops will help you learn the study skills necessary to become a successful college student.
Study skills coaching sessions are individual appointments during which students have the opportunity to meet with a study skills coach to discuss methods to improve their study skills in a variety of different areas. Students who have general questions or prefer individual appointments as opposed to group workshops will find these sessions useful. These sessions can either be weekly meetings or scheduled on an “as needed” basis.
During posted drop-in hours, tutors are available for specified courses to answer questions. Appointments are not necessary for drop-in hours.
A typical session for group tutoring, writing assistance, study skills workshop, or study skills coaching is 50 minutes. Drop-in hours for tutoring assistance are also 50 minutes, but have the potential to last longer if the tutor has drop-in hours scheduled consecutively. Please check our schedules for times.
For all appointments, please check in at the UCLA reception desk, 133 Stevenson Hall.

Weekly group attendance is very important to the learning process that takes place in the tutoring groups during each session. Students who cannot attend a particular session need to notify the tutor by email prior to the scheduled time for the meeting in order for the absence to be excused. Students who acquire two unexcused absences during the semester will be dropped from the group tutoring session.
Drop-ins are welcome as space allows, but due to space limitations, registration for study skills workshops is necessary to assure a seat in the workshop of your choice.
